What else is as vital as the ability to save human lives? A doctor’s routine is perfectly meaningful in its striving to relieve the pain and suffering, to get rid of diseases and illnesses, to find new secrets of good health. There are not many professions of which one might say with no exaggeration, “This job is done for the benefit of the whole human race”. Surely, the first and most important among such professions is that of doctor.

To succeed in such a complicated area, which puts so much responsibility on the person, one needs to study really hard. Education received must be of highest quality, too. Russia is famous for its medical traditions, as well as its achievements in science, inventions and discoveries. Many Russian Nobel Laureates won the Prize in Medicine. Saint- Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy is one of the oldest leaders among the medical higher education establishments in the Russian Federation.

The Academy was founded in 1895, and for over 113 years it has retained its high international reputation. In the rating of medical universities of Russia, the Academy appears in the leading “A” group. Among the nearly 1060 government universities of Russia, the Academy is included in the first hundred of the best ones. It has received a certificate of the “100 Best Universities of Russia” and a special medal. It is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is mentioned in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools. In 2004 Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy was rewarded twice: it received a gold medal and a “European Quality” diploma, which confirms the professional approach to teaching of students and the high standard of its graduates’ qualification in the European perspective. For its long-standing contribution to the development of medical education in the world, the Academy got the Order of St. Sophia (Oxford, England) in 2004. The Academy was the world’s first medical educational institution to specialize in Pediatrics. For many years it has been the leader in this area.

Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy is licensed and accredited by the State for preparing specialists in the area of Medicine. Graduates of the Academy receive national degrees in education that confirm their competence and skills to be in accordance with the state educational standards prescribed for their specialties. An Academy’s degree confirms that its owner has achieved the standard of theoretical knowledge and practical skills sufficient to perform medical activities in accordance with the requirements, and it entitles the person certified to exercise medicine professionally on the territory of the Russian Federation and in other countries.

The most advanced medical equipment and technical resources are at the service of Saint-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy. The intellectual and scientific potential of the teaching staff allows the Academy to gradually improve the forms and methods of training, introducing creative elements into the educational process. Subjects are taught in Russian and in English. More than 60 large clinics in Saint-Petersburg provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life work-related situations. International conferences and symposiums on various issues of medicine are regularly held in Saint-Petersburg. During the period of studies, students are accommodated in 4 comfortable hostels. There are libraries, self-study classrooms, sport clubs, kitchens, and student cafes there.

The most important principle of training at the Academy is providing students with access to patients from the very first year of studies. Interdisciplinary approach to training in fundamental subjects and the interrelation between theoretical and clinical subjects also provide for the efficiency of education. Students of the Academy take part in research within the framework of the student research programs and societies.

On Academy’s course completion students receive a degree with the international standard appendix. Programs and syllabuses that are used in the course of training are those recommended by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME).Several thousands doctors who graduated from the Academy are presently working in various fields of medicine in more than 70 countries in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Near and Middle East, Australia and even Antarctica! Upon successful completion of any Russian state university, the graduate gets higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating speciality and qualification. The graduate also gets EUROPEAN APPENDIX tothe degree, which allows to apply for aprestigious job or continue education in 45 European countries signed up to the Bologna convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education.

During the initial registration procedure the student pays 200 EURO (to be included into invoice for payment of the total amount), which covers the Academy registration fee, meeting of the student at the international airport in Moscow, transfer to the domestic airport in Moscow, meeting at the airport in Saint-Petersburg, accompanying to the Academy, drawing up documents for Academy admission, etc. The above amount does not include the airfare. Food expenses are 150 EURO per month. When first entering the Russian Federation, the student should have about 400 EURO to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
