What is Clinical Research?

Clinical Research is a systematic study for new drugs in human subjects to generate data for discovering
or verifying the Clinical, Pharmacological (including pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic) or adverse
effects with the object of determining safety and efficacy of the new drug.

Total market value of Clinical Research activities performed in India is expected to grow to around USD 1.5 - 2 billion* by 2010. The Clinical Research industry currently employs 5000 professionals
in India. As per the McKinsey report the Indian Clinical Trial Industry is estimated to employ 50,000 professionals by 2010. Salaries start at Rs. 1.8 lacs p.a. & go to over 15 lacs p.a. in a span of 5 years.

Major players in Clinical Research

India has numerous Clinical Research players with international standards infrastructure and manpower.
They are ready to support the drug development initiatives of several pharmaceutical companies and
entrepreneurs. As the number of studies carried out by these major players is on the rise, the career
prospects for Clinical Research professionals look positive. The Organizations involved in Clinical
Research in India has risen to over one hundred from less than only eight, three years ago. Ernst & Young
estimate that spends on clinical trials was 20million dollars during 2003 and has sharply risen to 300
million dollars in 2005 and expected to rise to 1.5 billion dollars by 2012. Apart from this India has 268
approved clinical trials that are in progress.
